Barely a week has gone since DMX passed, today we find ourselves mourning the loss of another rapper – Black Rob.

When someone from the Hip Hop world passes, it hits me that little bit harder because they were often so young. Their time had come far too soon. We grew up listening to many of these artists, for us ‘Old Heads’ there is only a few years difference in our ages. They provided the soundtracks to our lives. We have played their music for hours at home, in our cars, danced the night away with friends in clubs, at carnivals and parties. Their music is on a kickass training playlist to help us get in the zone. Their music blocks out the world for me when I am out with my headphones firmly on. They have played a part in my life whether it’s through being inspired by their music, marking a life event, even to when I have made a mix tape for someone. I feel like I know a part of them because they share their talent and music with the world.

Every time someone has gone, it is a reminder of our own mortality and for those around us. Life is precious and we must make the most of our time whilst we are alive. Please don’t wait until someone has gone to talk about how great they are, how much you love their music, or how much they meant to you.

Let’s show our appreciation to each other whilst we’re alive. Music has the power to unite people from all over the world, even when we don’t understand the language. Music is powerful through its creativity, it is healing, it is magical, it changes lives. Talk about your favourite artists, albums and songs, the best gigs you’ve been to. Share what you love, introduce your favourite artists to a new audience.

Let’s use our time on earth wisely. Give people their props & flowers whilst they’re alive, don’t leave it until it’s too late.

To all those who have passed, may you rest in power. My prayers are with you and for those you left behind. Thank you for your legacy, your music will live on.
